Cornerstone
Project Overview
Laying the Foundation for Pawling's Newest Table
Cornerstone is set to bring a new tradition of elevated American-Italian dining to Pawling, NY, in Spring 2025. However, the restaurant faced the classic pre-opening dilemma: they needed to generate excitement and capture community interest weeks before the kitchen was operational. With no full menu or food photography available, the brand needed a digital placeholder that worked harder than a simple "Under Construction" sign.
The mission was to build a lead-generating microsite. We needed to craft a visually compelling single-page experience that balanced elegance with casual comfort, capturing the "elevated yet approachable" vibe while aggressively building a VIP email list to ensure a packed house on opening night.
Challenges & Goals
The Challenges
Asset Scarcity: Without a finalized menu or interior photography, we had to rely on stock imagery and color psychology to convey the brand's atmosphere.
Tone Calibration: The client needed to hit a specific niche—"Elevated Casual." The design couldn't be too stuffy (fine dining) or too rustic (pizza joint).
Speed to Market: The project required a rapid turnaround to start capturing search traffic and emails well ahead of the spring launch window.
The Goals
Audience Capture: Implement a friction-free Mailchimp integration to build a "VIP Launch List" directly from the homepage.
Visual Strategy: Develop a warm, modern palette (Coral, Sea-Blue, Peach) that breaks away from stereotypical Italian red-and-white checkers.
SEO Priming: Inject local keywords ("American Italian restaurant in Pawling") into the metadata to begin indexing the site before the grand opening.
Strategy & Approach
Phase 1: Brand Discovery & Palette
We researched benchmarks like Fratelli Italian to identify layout cues but developed a unique visual identity. I curated a palette of Coral, Sea-Blue, and Peach softened by an off-white background. This fresh approach communicates modern comfort rather than traditional old-school Italian.
Phase 2: Single-Scroll Architecture
To maximize engagement with limited content, I structured a single-scroll journey. The flow moves logically from a Hero Fade-in (establishing the brand) to a Value Proposition (About Blurb) and finally to the Conversion Point (Email Capture). This linear path prevents user distraction.
Phase 3: Technical Foundation
We built the site on Popmenu for future scalability. I customized the CSS to ensure the hero text remained legible with fade-in overlays across all breakpoints (Mobile to Desktop). We also set up Google Analytics with event tracking on the signup form to measure conversion rates from day one.
