Backyard BBQ
Project Overview
Bringing Central Texas Smoke to the Cedar Rapids Turf
Backyard BBQ is set to disrupt the Cedar Rapids dining scene in Spring 2025 with a unique hybrid concept: a full-service Central Texas-style BBQ joint attached to a massive 14,000 sq. ft. indoor turf arena. Launching a dual-purpose venue presents a complex narrative challenge; the brand needed to appeal equally to lunch-hour brisket lovers and corporate teams looking for a massive event space, all before the doors even opened.
The mission was to build a pre-launch digital engine that generated hype and leads simultaneously. We needed to translate the bold, sports-inspired energy of the physical space into a cohesive website that drove early social following and secured event bookings well ahead of the grand opening.
Challenges & Goals
The Challenges
Dual Identity: The site had to showcase two very different value propositions—intimate dining and massive event rentals—without confusing the user or cluttering the navigation.
Pre-Launch Visibility: With no physical foot traffic yet, the digital presence had to do all the heavy lifting to build anticipation and collect interest.
Booking Friction: Managing inquiries for a 14,000 sq. ft. space required a streamlined intake process to prevent the sales team from being overwhelmed by unqualified leads.
The Goals
Visual Cohesion: Translate the logo’s bold orange and sports vibe into a full digital palette using #ECA10E, Charcoal, and Smoky Brown to echo the grill aesthetic.
Search Authority: Implement an aggressive local SEO strategy targeting distinct keywords like "Cedar Rapids BBQ" and "event space rentals" to capture both audiences.
Conversion Logic: Design intuitive Calls-to-Action (CTAs) that funnel visitors immediately to the Menu or the Event Inquiry form based on their intent.
Strategy & Approach
Phase 1: Sports-Inspired Identity
We extracted the brand's DNA from its logo, expanding the core Orange (#ECA10E) into a palette that includes Deep Charcoal and Accent Red to mimic grill flames. Typography played a huge role; we selected Oswald for high-impact, jersey-style headings and Open Sans for legible body text, striking a balance between "Sports Bar" and "Professional Venue."
Phase 2: The Dual-Track UX
To handle the multi-use facility, we mapped a scrolling homepage with distinct sections: "The Food" and "The Turf." This allowed us to tell the complete story in one linear journey. We integrated specialized inquiry forms for the event space to streamline bookings, separating them from general dining questions.
Phase 3: Pre-Opening SEO
We wrote every line of copy with search intent in mind. By crafting dedicated pages for "Events," "Private Events," and "Catering," we optimized the site for local search terms like "BBQ event space Cedar Rapids" long before the first brisket was sliced, ensuring the brand hit the ground running.
