YoungChuan
Project Overview
Refining the Palette of Modern Chinese Cuisine
YongChuan, a staple of NYC’s Lower East Side, is known for its innovative fusion of Ningbo and Szechuan cuisines. However, as the brand evolved, its digital presence felt stuck in the past. The existing website was dark, heavy, and disconnected from the restaurant's sophisticated future direction. With a new speakeasy-style bar concept launching, the client needed a digital pivot that would lighten the visual mood while retaining the venue's inherent elegance.
The mission was to engineer a "Tale of Two Ambiences." We needed to redesign the core website to be brighter and more accessible for diners, while simultaneously carving out a moody, distinct digital space for the new "async" bar concept—all while migrating operations to a more robust Toast POS infrastructure.
Challenges & Goals
The Challenges
Brand Dissonance: The previous site was overly dark and heavy, clashing with the new, photo-forward direction the client wanted to pursue.
Dual Identity: The restaurant needed to feel light and welcoming, but the new in-house bar needed to feel dark and "speakeasy-exclusive" without confusing the user.
Tech Debt: The client was moving from Square to Toast POS, requiring a seamless integration of new ordering workflows without disrupting service.
The Goals
Aesthetic Transformation: Implement a refined, lighter color palette to signal a new era for the brand, balancing modern appeal with traditional sophistication.
Operational Streamlining: Integrate Toast POS for direct ordering and consolidate reservations via Resy and OpenTable into a single user flow.
Strategic Segmentation: Build a dedicated, SEO-optimized funnel for Private Events and a separate, moody interface for the Bar concept.
Strategy & Approach
Phase 1: Visual Alleviation
We moved away from the heavy blacks of the previous site, introducing a sophisticated palette of Pale Gold (#e8dbb0), Forest Green (#203027), and Soft Charcoal (#161615). This lighter approach utilized white space and modern typography to give the main dining pages a clean, welcoming atmosphere that highlights the food photography.
Phase 2: The "Speakeasy" Contrast
To distinguish the main dining room from the new "async" bar, we deliberately broke the design system for the Bar page. We utilized a moody, dark aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the rest of the site, visually cueing the user that they are entering a different, exclusive experience within the venue.
Phase 3: Operational UX
We engineered the user journey to support high-volume operations. This included replacing the Square integration with Toast POS for seamless online ordering and creating clear, conversion-focused paths for Private Events inquiries (capacity up to 100) and reservations.
